All the films were shown as shot, no cuts, no splices. The popularity of this non-competitive festival has allowed it to return each year with more filmmakers participating. To date over 1000 films have been created for more than 50 One Take Super 8 Events! One Take Super 8 Eventhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15437604048106262107noreply@blogger.comBlogger142125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4052832692115771842.post-66797925984507127512017-07-11T16:05:00.002-04:002017-07-11T16:09:01.400-04:00almost there! It's a race to the finish, as programs are off to the printers. Now it's time to splice onto reels and prep the projector for another great event in Regina this Thursday followed by Saskatoon next Tuesday.

We're thrilled to have had over 50 filmmakers participate this year, with many returning filmmakers.

The Regina and Saskatoon events will be the 61st and 62nd (respectively) OTS8 events that have been hosted across North America, which is an incredible achievement meaning more than 1200 films in total.

Looking forward to seeing everyone out at the screenings (and we might have some surprise films depending on the efficiency of the Australian/Canadian postal service).
We are very excited to release this year's poster design courtesy of Emily Kohlert (Dandelion) who also created last year's posters and programs. We'll be screen printing them soon, thanks to Tucker's for their continued support, and you'll be seeing them up around Regina and Saskatoon in the next week or so.

Screen printed posters mean the event is just around the corner, and we're very excited that for the first time we have full capacity in both Regina and Saskatoon with each city have 25 new films in production! With any luck everyone will finish on time and we'll get to premiere 50 new films on the 13th and 18th of July. One Take Super 8 Eventhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15437604048106262107noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4052832692115771842.post-77687962710607386712017-06-01T17:19:00.000-04:002017-06-01T17:19:00.629-04:00Catching up!Time flies when you're trying to organize another edition of the OTS8!

We're back in Saskatchewan for the 5th annual event in Saskatooon, and our longest running edition in Regina!

Entry forms have been circulating, people have been signing up, and we're well underway towards our screenings this summer.

Films will be shot during June and returned in time for the July 13th event at the Regina Public Library Theatre, and the following Tuesday, July 18th at the Roxy Theatre in Saskatoon.

Last night, PAVED Arts kindly hosted our first event OTS8 filmmaking workshop (crazy it took 17 years to do that here). Amalie Atkins provided all the tips from her experience with film in how to make a film in a day, and there were lots of great questions from participants keen to try their hand at small gauge filmmaking. What's surprising now as we're that much more removed from celluloid is how many participants have never used a camera with a viewfinder, and how many people regularly use the term video when speaking about making motion picture. Times change!

Lots of first time filmmakers are signing up and we have been able to wrangle enough working cameras to see us through, as color reversal film becomes increasingly difficult to source (Hurry up Kodak with Ektachrome!!). Thanks to Niagara Custom Lab for making magic in getting us enough reels to make sure it's not a monochrome event.

And thanks again to the Saskatchewan Arts Board and SaskCulture through their SaskFestivals grant for providing grant support to ensure we can pay all the artists IMAA screening fees.
Very exciting, but much like the camera they announced at CES last year, we'll hold our collective breaths until we can hold them in our hands.

As Sundance and Slamdance close up their festivals, there's a little festival in Toronto dedicated to this small gauge formats that celebrating it's 10th anniversary.

Congratulations to the organizers of the 8 Fest for providing a great showcase for small gauge films for all these years, and being dedicated to showing these films in their original formats.

Over the years, the 8 fest has done a tremendous job of featuring many films from past OTS8 events from across the country.

This year, I am deeply humbled (and slightly terrified) to have been selected as the Canadian Spotlight Artist. It's been a very interesting process looking at my past films and having them curated into a program. A few of my past one take films made the list. It's been nice revisiting them again. But there are quite a few films I have never shown publicly before, and this was a good motivation to get them ready for the big screen for their premieres. It's hard to believe that a couple of the films are close to 20 years old already.

The benefit of being a part of OTS8 events is that I was able to share the anxiety with a group of 20+ filmmakers, and only had to bear responsibility for my 3 minutes (good or bad). But having 19 of my films play back to back is a real departure from my comfort zone.

In any case, my thanks to the organizers of the 8 fest for being such great supporters of the OTS8 and if you happen to be in Toronto this weekend, please check out this festival, it's one of a kind and totally worth it.

Shortly after the Saskatchewan screenings this past summer, we were fortunate to continue our partnership with Revel8 in Perth, Australia which screened 6 films made by Regina and Saskatoon filmmakers. These 6 films (you can see on youtube) received a brand new soundtrack thanks to local composers and musicians in Perth. Jay Sotkowy's Nunchuk Connection won Best International Super 8 Film!

The filmmakers who screened there included:
Shakey Wilson - Welcome to Rosthern
Kyath Battie - Prism
Amber Phelps Bondaroff - Enter the Egg
Stephanie McKay - The Last Great Gentleman
Catherine Lemire - Latin Fever
And a few weeks back Winnipeg celebrated their 11th!!!! OTS8 at WNDX.

That's a lot of Manitoba films over a decade, and we're thrilled that they are still going strong. (See list of films and filmmakers at the bottom of this post)

Florida is getting underway their with 9th annual 1:1 Super 8 Cinema Soiree and announced their call for submissions. The screening is going to be at the Savor Cinema Fort Lauderdale which used to be the Cinema Paradiso. This was actually the venue for the very first OTS8 in Florida way back in March 2006. This year's screening will be at 1pm on December 10th. They might consider a name change to Super 8 Cinema Matinee!

We'll keep you posted on some upcoming small gauge festivals in the new year and let you know if some OTS8 participants are screening their work again.

After more than a decade and hundreds of films, you would think
Winnipegers would have run out of original ideas for super 8 films. You
would be wrong. Over thirty new, never-seen- before small gauge reels
will be added to WNDX’s One Take Super 8 Event canon of filmic wonder.
The event has been going for long enough; some of the original films are
prime for a reboot, no? With no set theme or criteria, anything can
happen in these single reel, unedited super 8 films. First time
filmmakers and experienced veterans face the same anxiety around their
vintage cameras and creative visions. Regardless of the outcome,
audiences are guaranteed a one of a kind film screening featuring local
talent on the big screen adding new treasures to a long history of
totally independent and budget conscious filmmaking in the peg.
Phew! That was close. I really don't wish to cut it that close again. This morning involved anxiously checking the Canada Post website tracking monitor to see when the package would arrive.
1:03am arrived in Saskatoon. 3:15 am item processed. 5 am item ready for delivery 8:10am item out for delivery. Meanwhile, at 8:25 am I am on air on the local CBC morning show talking about a screening that may or may not happen tonight.

Then I spent the next few hours watching the clock. Finally I saw the postman across the street at my neighbor's house and I frantically ran out my front door and waved him down (he looked slightly apprehensive as he pulled out his earbuds). He told me he had a few packages in the truck and after walking his route would deliver them. Mine might be one of them. AAAAHHHHH!!! I took a deep breath and went back inside and tried deep breathing exercises. Fortunately (as the photo somewhat foreshadowed), the films arrived in time for me to do a very speedy splicing job and get all the films reeled up and headed to the theatre with a little time to spare.

The rest is now history with 25 filmmakers sharing 20 films in Saskatoon to an audience of over 185 including guests visiting Saskatoon from other cities across Canada (love that they chose our event for a Wednesday evening's entertainment). Thanks to the lovely Roxy Theatre for being such gracious hosts once again.

A lot of highlights to share, including returning filmmakers brother/sister duo Charles and Catherine Lemire who made individual films for the event A Birthday Bash / Latin Fever, but there's an auteur streak running their their family. Great use of in camera editing and planning your story in advance.

A couple of pet films (by chance screened back to back) by Chris Smith and Stephanie McKay, highlighting Cheeseburger that cat in a dramatic role in Smith's film and McKay giving her dog Quincy a lead role in demonstrating the finer behaviors of the canine species.

Adeel Salman returned to the festival with a dark romantic tale with a twisted finish. a perfect genre film, timed to perfection.

Brad Proudlove also returned to the event with a prairie music video to the song 'Tuff' by SK Rap duo Run the Pools.

Many other highlights from the night, and despite a few audio technical issues, a smooth presentation to a very appreciative audience. Already looking forward to next year, but first I have to get to splicing those Regina films!

Thanks to Reilly Forbes for the pic!
Well, we're about 48 hours away from our show in Saskatoon, and the programs are printed, the media coverage is underway, and we wait with baited breath for the films to make their way from Toronto to Saskatoon care of Canada Expresspost. If you're keen to follow the progress, here's the tracking #0101385000762737. The good news is that the expected delivery date is June 8th. The tough news is that will give me just a few hours to splice everything together and get it in a projector at the theatre. No biggie.

Films are in cameras, and we are excited to have them return to Saskatoon and Regina filled with great images to share at our upcoming events on June 8 and 9th.

We're also very pleased to launch our new poster design by Dandelion design (who helped us last year with our programs, and this year added pro-design skills to these one of a kind posters).

We'll be screen printing them in the next week, and then you'll see these one of a kind creations hanging up around town.

Also, in the exciting news department, we have a record number of submissions from both Saskatoon and Regina this year, with both cities breaking the 25 filmmaker benchmark (we could have said no, we're full, but that would be crazy, when there are willing filmmakers!)

So, we'll be premiering over 50 brand new films in Regina and Saskatoon, which is a record for us. To put that in perspective, 2700 feet of film will go through cameras in the course of a few weeks.
That's over half a mile of film spliced end to end...
or seven and a half football fields.

In short, that's a lot of super 8.

While, we're awaiting those films to get shot and processed a shout out to Montreal who will be screening their newest films on May 24 at La Salla Rosa at their 6th annual OTS8.
The Daily Orange provided a great article about the event and interviews with its participants. I love the irony that the headline says 'videographers produce a film'. too funny, it used to be the opposite problem of 'filmmakers making videos'.

A big congratulations to Jason and Briana Kohlbrenner on staging another fantastic event and their commitment to providing an opportunity to first time filmmakers to create new work and share it locally.

Meanwhile, both Montreal and Vancouver filmmakers have picked up their cartridges and are in the middle of production on their various one take projects. Looking forward to seeing how they turn out, with some really experienced filmmakers taking part in both cities.

Well if you're in Vancouver and surrounding area (come on Burnaby, you know you want to), you'll be thrilled to know that you'll now have a chance to take part in your very own One Take Super 8 Event thanks to our friends at the Iris Film Collective.

They are launching their call for submissions February 1st, and it's the same format everyone has come to love (which is why this OTS8 has spread across the continent). Anyone can enter, there's no theme, no cuts, no splices, and everything that's submitted will be screened on its original format.

How exciting is that?

We've been fans of Alex Mackenzie's celluloid commitment for a long time, and visiting his Blinding Light cinema (what feels like forever ago), was an inspiration for the OTS8 getting started in Regina back in 2000 at the antechamber.

So, if you're in the city of glass and feel like being part of something special to kickstart your year, get ready to sign up Monday morning.
(and everyone who voted for her!!)

Dianne placed 3rd in audience votes out of the 15 films selected to screen at the Slamdance Kodak showcase.

This is a great success for a One Take Super 8 Event film and a testament to the quality of films that emerge from our events across North America.

Dianne travelled to Slamdance for the screening and to accept her prize. We're hoping to get a bit of a festival journal entry from her to post on our blog soon.

We're also pleased to announce that we're on the verge of announcing our dates for the 2016 One Take Super 8 Event in Regina and Saskatoon thanks to the support of the Saskatchewan Arts Board.

Dianne Ouellette's film Red is Dead (originally called Dog Tales), screened silent at the One Take Super 8 Event in Regina in 2013. A year later she finished the film with a soundtrack (and the new title).

Kodak celebrated 50 years of super 8 in 2015, and Dianne submitted her film as part of Super 8 Filmmaking Challenge. The film has made it to the finals of the online contest through the Audience Choice Awards. There were over 500 entries from around
the world and people could vote for the films that they liked.

Red is Dead came
in second in the Flashback category, therefore in the final 15 films
that have been invited to screen at the Slamdance Film Festival at a
special Kodak screening. Out of the top 15 films Dianne needs to be voted into
the top 3 to win a cool camera and some super 8 film kits. Dianne is going to
attend the screening at the Slamdance Film Festival which takes place
on January 25.

Red is Dead is the only Canadian in the top 15 super 8 films as
well.

You can check out the embedded video below (or click here for a HD version).

Voting starts January 19 and you can vote every day up until the screening on January 25th. So, that's 7 votes per person.

Here is the link where you will be able to start voting on January 19th

It's been a busy end of year in 2015.

Florida had another successful 1:1 film Festival, you can check out pics and the list of participants here.

Our pals in Syracuse have been shooting their films for the past few months, and only have a few days left to turn in their cartridges.

And we're starting the new year with Kodak making an announcement at the CES that they are reinvesting in super 8 and producing a new camera for release this year.

While this is good news for enthusiasts of the format, Kodak better make a really good camera for $400-$750 if they want people to pick up celluloid. There are still plenty of really good operational super 8 cameras that people have been using since the late 70's that are far more affordable to buy used. Additionally, the expense of processing stated at $50-$75 is far beyond current lab fees (if they are not including the cost of the unexposed cartridge).

So, we'll be keeping an eye on future announcements, and with cautious optimism we hope this does make super 8 filmmaking more accessible for years to come.

In the meantime, a shout out to all of our followers, filmmakers, labs and supporters that have kept super 8 alive, since we started this One Take Super8 adventure at the turn of the millenium.

Stay tuned for more good news as we ramp up for 2016 !

After a successful crowdfunding campaign, the Syracuse crew is accepting films for its 9th Annual OTS8. If you donated to their campaign, great! Now make a film!

And further south in sunny Florida, the 1:1 Super 8 Cinema Soiree (a classy title for a OTS8 event) has also put out their call for submissions for their 8th annual event (it's always awesome for these events to hit the milestone 8 year mark).

We're excited to see what films get made by our friends south of the border, as we settle in for a wonderful winter of super 8 viewing.

Also, a congrats to our WNDX friends for screening 34 new super 8 films at their 10th annual OTS8 in Winnipeg. We'll be posting a review of the show on this blog soon.

And year after year with 100's of films completed there are still filmmakers breaking new ground, and JS Gauthier is definitely one of them. His 3D printed models became a pixelated wonder called The Runner. You can read the entire post here. And to watch his magical genius, we've provided a link to his film online.
Every year it's so exciting to see our event go up on the history Roxy. But it makes me realize we have a lot of work to do!

Can't believe we're less than 48 hours away from the premiere of the Saskatoon films, followed by Regina's premieres a day later. Wanted to post things earlier, but we've been frantically busy collecting titles, synopses, soundtracks (hint, a KORG will be present in Saskatoon), designing programs and getting them off to the printer and doing media interviews. PHEW! Oh yeah, tested the projector because I was losing sleep that it was playing everything in slow motion. But that's NOT the case, so I am sleeping better now. Runs like a charm (typing while knocking on wooden desk).

Speaking of program design, just wanted to do a shout out to Emily Kohlert of Dandelion design for doing an incredible job on designing our programs for Saskatoon and Regina. They look great and I'd give you a sneak peak, but you'll just have to come to the events to get one :)

Speaking of the events. Share the Facebook pages to those you know. Here's the link for Saskatoon, and here's the one for Regina

The screenings are 100% FREE. Thanks to the support of the Saskatchewan Arts Board.

Now it's time to actually splice these films together, and we'll be pretty much set for two fantastic events!
Our cine-comrades in Montreal have been busy organizing the 5th OTS8 which is set to take place at La Salla Rosa on May 27th at 8pm.

Our great thanks to the Double Negative Collective for putting together a great group of filmmakers. And kudos to the Canada Council for supporting the event (We really should consider asking the CC to get behind the SK events someday :)

Some incredible films have come out of the Montreal events, and the screenings are definitely one of a kind. If you are in the 514, head to the event, and join their Facebook event page.

24 films by 28 filmmakers will hit the screen, see below for a list of filmmaker names.
Depending on whether you're in Regina or Saskatoon will determine how you see it :) They'll be popping up around town very soon.

The film cartridges were being dropped off fast and furious in both cities today, as we near the 50 total films for the events. Excitement is definitely building toward our screenings at the Roxy and the RPL Theatre on the 4th and 5th of June respectively.

Now filmmakers are busy getting their audio tracks together, and we're thrilled that the line up of participants is a great mix of veteran OTS8 filmmakers and first time super 8 shooters. Here's hoping all the cameras cooperated for one more year. We'll announce the names of the filmmakers here soon.

The films are being shipped to Toronto and thanks to Sebastjan and his team at Niagara Custom Lab for their processing and providing us with the film stock for the event this year.
And a final thanks to PAVED Arts and the Saskatchewan Filmpool Cooperative for being great partners in providing equipment, expertise, and a place to pick up film for the events this year.

We're excited to be hosting 2 events in Saskatchewan, June 4 at the Roxy Theatre in Saskatoon we'll present up to 25 new films, then the next day Friday June 5, we return to the Regina Public Library Theatre for 25 new films. It's an extravaganza of small gauge cinema! So let the petty rivalry begin between the cities as we attempt to get people making new movies to screen before ravenous audiences.

It's 40$ for b/w 50$ for colour, and we're paying artist fees to all participants. Get your forms at PAVED Arts in Saskatoon and the Sask Filmpool in Regina before April 17 and you can pick up your film at the same time and start shooting. All films must be returned by May 11 for processing.

This is all very exciting so please tell your friends, cause who knows how many more chances we'll have left to make these wonderful super 8 films light up the big screen in their original format.
So it's become clear I'm doing a bit of catch up, but so many great OTS8 related events last year, I'm finally getting around to posting them here.

The 1:1 Super 8 Cinema Soiree (what a fancy title, no?) ended our super 8 season on December 5th last year at Jump the Shark (formerly The Bubble), which has hosted the event for many years now.

Organizer Shane Eason rounded up another great set of filmmakers, and you can see pics from the event on their Facebook Page (follow them if you are not already)
